#14826 - Super Civil War era Backpack Housewife
The Civil War soldiers often mended their own uniforms and socks when on campaigns. They often took compact "housewives" on the march, when they were not allowed their more robust wives in the tents! This is a reinforced, double cloth-layer roll which contains pins and bone buttons. A thimble was took thick to roll, so the padded ends of housewife could be used to "push" needle through cloth. The material is nice striped gray and violet, slightly faded by 150 years. There is a faint embossed edge design. No owner markings. About 3 inches long. A great example!
