#14949 - Huge Civil War Era Amputation Blade for Flesh
This is a very Civil War era classic "amputation knife". These long thin blade were so sharp that they could quickly cut through skin, tendon and thick muscles. (Then, the serrated bone saws took over!) This has the checked wooden handle which is typical of CW era surgeon's instruments prior to hot steam sterilization of later Victorian era. This is marked by maker "Stevens & Son London". (Many capital surgical sets of era came over from England, while local factories made weapons) It is about 14 1/4" long. Slight tarnish here & there... And just FYI, this was a favorite plaything for Jack the Ripper....
