#15896 - Custom Made Artillery Captain Board possibly CSA
This is a smaller-than-usual Captain of the Artillery shoulder rank board. Built upon a thin canvas swatch which essentially lays the rolled borders nearly onto the uniform. Thus, I suspect it may have been home-made for a Confederate officer. Boards were reduced in size near the end of the Civil War in order to avoid the attention of enemy snipers. This hand-built device incorporates bright brass wires over linear cushions, edged by wire border wire. The field is plain red cloth that carries out beyond the borders. Some edge wires are missing and one corner is worn, showing the underlying pad. This is a pretty unique variant. Only 2 1/2" long by 1 1/8" wide. It comes in a free Riker case for same and easy future display.
