#11573 - GAR painted brass buckle cover
Such brass covers were used during Civil War to cover harness buckles so that passing brush did not catch and undo the saddle on a ride. These heart-motif buckle covers are often found at CW sites. This one was painted in order to look silvered. This was often done after war for GAR halls or parades of old Vets. It is about 2" across for covering larger buckles.
