#17686 - Confederate Clip Corner Belt Plate Gettysburg
This is a classic sheet-metal "clip corner" belt plate used by Confederate troops who could not obtain the very limited supply of CS plates. Made in local metal shops down South for the army. These had 3 hooks sweated on the back which usually are gone from ground action of being buried for many decades. This has no rear hooks. It is dented with small edge tears, but solid. It comes from a reputable Gettysburg relic shop where I found it begging for attention. The label states it was recovered "from the Gettysburg Battlefield/ Cemetery Ridge near Pickett's Charge. Originally in the old Shields Museum in GB which sold off its relics and closed decades ago. Later from Tom Bohon collection. Since most all the central battlefield sites at Gettysburg are now owned by the National Park Service and protected from further relic hunting, no more artifacts like this will be discovered. Thus, finds from many decades ago are rare.
